Approach

Approach

I believe each person comes to therapy as an expert on their problem while the therapist is an expert in various therapeutic approaches. Therefore, the therapeutic process requires collaborative work between the client and the therapist and is unique for each situation. Regardless of the approach we are going to draw upon in working together, I believe in creating a safe and confidential environment for you to share your difficulties.

As a psychologist I was trained in a variety of therapeutic approaches. I am experienced with CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy)

psychodynamic therapy,  Schema Therapy and EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing).

Philosophy

We meet people. Not problems, not cases, not patients, we relate with people. And through that relationship - derived from our values and embedded in the mixed traditions and our roots - we try to help people. In the end it’s not the suffering or dysfunction that we meet, it’s the people who are struggling. We see people.

- Frankland and Walsh 2013

This statement illustrates the values of the type of counselling  psychology which I aspire to bring to my clients in my daily work and in my research. I believe we are not passive recipients of the sometimes harsh reality of the world around us.  Instead I believe that we can actively create a new, positive sense of reality through our experience and knowledge. The importance of the client's subjective experience of reality allows us, working together, to co-create new meanings and new knowledge. Acting as a reflective practitioner my stance allows me to be aware of my own values and beliefs that I bring to the therapeutic environment when working with you.

CBT - Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

CBT

CBT has been scientifically proven as an effective form of therapy for a wide range of psychological problems. CBT is a form of short-term therapy which focuses on connection between our cognitions (thoughts, beliefs and attitudes), our behaviours, emotions and physiological sensations. CBT has largely psycho-educational focus and the primary focus is on empowering the client with tools and strategies for breaking the cycle of unhelpful cognitions and behaviours which affect our emotions and physiological responses.

ST - Schema Therapy

ST is an integrative therapy, with a strong relational emphasis, designed to address deeper level maladaptive schemas and interpersonal patterns. Schemas represent patterns of internal experience which include memories, beliefs, emotions, and thoughts. When our childhood needs are not met, it may lead to the development of “early maladaptive schemas”. Early maladaptive schemas will affect relationships with others and feelings about ourselves. Therefore, in ST we focus on childhood experiences that cause life long difficulties. ST utilises techniques from four main domains: interpersonal, cognitive, behavioural, as well as experiential techniques (such as imagery rescripting, chair-work, and historical role play) designed to provide corrective emotional experiences that facilitate deeper level ‘core’ emotional growth and change.

Schema Therapy

EMDR - Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing

EMDR

EMDR is a form of short- term therapy that uses eye movement to overcome various types of trauma. EMDR is also an effective treatment tool to alleviate symptoms of anxiety and panic. EMDR imitates REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep by causing bilateral stimulation in the session. This could be through eye movement (when your eyes move side to side) or sound or tapping. The bilateral stimulation imitates the way the brain processes things. Therefore, in EMDR, by going back to the trauma and using bilateral stimulation, we are able to process the trauma much more quickly with a lower rate of flashbacks and trauma relapse than in traditional forms of therapy. In EMDR you can work individually, as a couple or as a group.
